Meet the People Behind Powis House: A Story of Purpose, Place and Passion

At the foot of the Ochil Hills, just minutes from Stirling, lies a quiet pocket of Scottish countryside that holds centuries of stories — and the start of our own.

We’re James and Jennifer — the husband and wife team behind Powis House Estate. Over the past three years, we’ve been slowly and carefully restoring this 10-acre estate with one goal in mind: To create a place where people can come to rest, reconnect, and feel something a little magical (while we build home for our own family).

We now welcome guests year-round into our two self-catered cottages and are expanding to offer more accommodation and a small number of meaningful retreats each year.

A Historic Estate with a Warm Welcome

The Powis Estate dates back to the 1400s, with the house as it stands today built in 1746. Through the centuries, it’s been a quiet witness to Scotland’s fight to become a nation, home to noble families and a sanctuary for soldiers during WWII.

But this isn’t a museum. It’s a lived-in, lovingly maintained estate — one that now offers cosy, characterful accommodation for guests who want a peaceful break surrounded by history and nature.

Ensuring Powis House is here for another 300 years

We have been sensitively dragging the small estate into the 21st century with the goal of making it 100% financially and environmentally sustainable by the end of 2026 which means we can continue to nurture its place in history and pass on to the next generation (one day). 

We are working to i) restore and maintain the listed buildings, ii) create an income that provides financial longevity for the estate using the buildings and land, iii) become 100% energy and water sustainable and iv) create experiences that the local community can enjoy.

Cosy & characterful accommodation

We currently let two renovated three-bedroom cottages, each with open fires, carefully restored features, and views across our grounds and woodlands. It’s self-catering, but with the sense that someone cares deeply about your stay — because we do.

So far we have been blessed with over 150 wonderful families and groups of friends who have been kind enough to give their stay incredible reviews, which make us feel proud and happy that we can share the magic of this beautiful estate.

Over 2025 we will be adding more accommodation, each with it's own quirks and character, making sure that it compliments the beauty of the land and the property.

The Retreats: Small, Special, Soulful

Alongside welcoming holiday guests, we have open up Powis House for a small number of retreats each year. These are led by experienced teachers in yoga, running, writing, creativity, and wellness — and offer something a little deeper than your average weekend away.

With space to accommodate up to 12–14 guests (more in 2026 as we grow), we aim to make each retreat intimate, memorable, and nourishing — both for guests and retreat leaders.

We host, teachers lead. We take care of the land, the logistics, the warmth, and the atmosphere, while teachers focus on doing what they do best, so whether your a guest or a teacher, we can promise you an exceptional experience.

Who We Are

We’re not a faceless rental company or a corporate retreat centre. We’re two people who left behind careers in the Arts and Tech in London to start a family in an place we love (Scotland) and put everything into restoring this special place.

Together, we do everything from mowing the lawns, renovating the accommodation to greeting guests at check-in. We believe places like this need people who care — and that hospitality, at its best, is deeply personal.
